On January 25th, Gov. Laura Kelly announced that Kansas’ Tourism Department will join the Department of Commerce to promote economic development in the areas of travel and tourism. Kansas’ Tourism Division was previously based out of the Wildlife Department for 10 years, and with the help of businesses, destination marketing organizations (DMOs), and Industry Partners, travel and tourism will become an increased focus under Kelly’s leadership.
The Travel Industry Association of Kansas, Kansas Restaurant & Hospitality Association, and Kansas Economic Development Alliance were three primary advocates who initiated this request for Kelly, and this Executive Reorganization Order will go into effect into July 2021 unless rejected by the Senate or House.
